What is a GR1 titanium rod?

GR1 Titanium Rod is usually made of pure titanium or titanium alloys. High Purity GR1 Titanium Bar is made of titanium metal with high purity, which has high corrosion resistance and good machinability. Why Would You Pick GR1 Over Stainless Steel or Aluminum?

1. It survives where stainless dies.
316 stainless pits in seawater. Chlorides eat it from the surface inward. GR1 doesn't care. Its passive oxide layer reforms instantly if scratched. You can leave a GR1 Titanium Rod in salt spray for years and pull it out looking almost new.

Real example: Pump shafts in desalination plants. Stainless lasts 6–12 months. GR1 lasts 5–8 years.

 

2. It's 40% lighter than steel, but not soft like aluminum.
Aluminum is light, yes. But it galls, it's weak in thin sections, and it doesn't weld as cleanly as titanium. GR1 Titanium Alloy Bar gives you lightweight - 4.51 g/cm³ - with real toughness.

Pick up a 1" diameter GR1 Titanium Rod. It feels surprisingly light. Then try to dent it with a hammer. You'll see the difference.

 

3. It's completely non-magnetic, even after welding.
This is a sleeper requirement. Some stainless grades (304, 316) can become slightly magnetic after cold working or welding. GR1 never does. If you're building anything near MRI machines, sensitive electronics, or compass housings, that matters.

FAQ

Is GR1 Titanium Rod the same as "Grade 1 Titanium"?

Yes. GR1 Titanium Rod and Grade 1 are the same thing. GR1 is just the short form people use in drawings, quotes, and stock lists. If you see "CP Titanium Grade 1" - that's also GR1.

 

Can I use GR1 Titanium Rod in seawater forever?

"Forever" is a strong word, but realistically - yes, for many years. GR1 has excellent corrosion resistance in seawater. It won't pit like 316 stainless. That said, crevice corrosion can happen in very tight, stagnant areas at high temperatures. If your design has no deep crevices and stays under 80°C, you're safe.

 

Is GR1 stronger than 304 stainless steel?

No. GR1 Titanium Bar has lower tensile and yield strength than 304 stainless. But strength isn't always the problem. If corrosion or weight is your real issue, GR1 wins. Don't pick GR1 for high-load structural jobs. Pick it for chemical, marine, or lightweight applications.

 

Can I anodize GR1 Titanium Rod at home?

You can, but results vary. Home anodizing (using battery acid or TSP solution with a power supply) works on small parts. For consistent, bright colors on longer rods or production quantities, shop anodizing is better. Either way, GR1 Titanium Alloy Bar anodizes more evenly than GR5 because it has no aluminum or vanadium.

 

Does GR1 Titanium Rod rust or turn black over time?

No rust - ever. Titanium doesn't contain iron, so it cannot form iron oxide (rust). It can, however, form a thin oxide layer that might change color slightly after years of high heat or UV exposure. That's not failure. That's just titanium being titanium.

 

What's the difference between GR1 and GR2 Titanium Rod?

Small but meaningful. GR1 has lower oxygen content → softer, more formable, slightly lower strength. GR2 has slightly higher oxygen → stronger, but less ductile. For deep drawing, bending, or flanging - GR1 is better. For general purpose where you want a little more strength - GR2 is fine. Most people won't notice the difference unless they do heavy forming.

Our Packaging

GR1 Titanium Rods are packaged to arrive clean, straight, and unmarked - even on international freight. Each rod is individually separated using foam or kraft paper sleeves to prevent surface contact and galling during transit. For polished or ground finish rods, we add a layer of VCI (vapor corrosion inhibitor) paper and heat-sealed polyethylene film to block moisture and salt air. Bundles are strapped to steel pallets with edge protectors, then banded and shrink-wrapped. For cut-to-length pieces under 500mm, we use compartmentalized wooden crates instead of bundles - no rattling, no edge damage. Every package includes a laminated packing list and a waterproof document pouch bolted to the outside of the crate or pallet. If you require export-standard wooden packaging (ISPM-15), that's our default for all non-EU shipments.

Our Factory & Equipment

We manufacture GR1 Titanium Rods on a dedicated production line built specifically for small-diameter precision bars and medium-section rounds. Our equipment includes 5-ton vacuum consumable arc remelting (VAR) furnaces for melt consistency, a continuous extrusion press for billet breakdown, and a two-roll rotary piercing mill for seamless rod production. For finishing, we run two centerless grinding lines (one rough, one precision) capable of holding h6–h9 tolerances on diameters from 3mm to 80mm, plus a polishing line with automatic grit progression up to 400#. All materials are inspected in-house using an optical emission spectrometer for chemistry verification and an ultrasonic flaw detector for internal soundness. We're not a massive mill - and that's intentional. Small enough to care about your 50-piece order. Big enough to deliver 10 tons on time.
