Acid Pickling Process for Titanium and Titanium Alloy Materials

Jan 20, 2026

When manufacturing titanium and titanium alloy materials, one of the most critical steps is removing oxide scale. Acid pickling is the primary method for achieving this, and its success relies on careful preparation and process control.

Pre-Treatment Before Pickling

Before initiating the pickling process, it's essential to pre-treat the titanium materials. This can include methods like molten alkaline washing, mechanical scale breaking, or sandblasting. These pre-treatments help to remove surface dirt and thick oxide layers, ensuring that the surface is clean and optimized for the subsequent titanium forging process. Proper pre-treatment not only enhances the quality of the titanium but also improves the effectiveness of the acid pickling process.

The Acid Pickling Process

For titanium materials with a light oxide layer, particularly those formed at temperatures below 600°C, acid pickling is a highly effective method for removal. During this process, the titanium interacts with the acidic solution, which dissolves the oxide scale and produces metal ions. However, acid pickling is not just a straightforward chemical reaction-it also involves electrochemical phenomena. Special attention must be paid to the reduction of hydrogen ions in the acidic solution, especially when it contains hydrofluoric acid or fluoride-based compounds.

If hydrogen ions are reduced to atomic or molecular hydrogen, they may diffuse into the metal, leading to hydrogen embrittlement. This can severely compromise the performance and longevity of titanium materials. Therefore, careful monitoring of the acid solution's composition and ratio is crucial.

Controlling the Acid Solution

To prevent hydrogen embrittlement, the ratio of nitric acid to hydrofluoric acid should always be kept above 5:1. This is critical to maintaining a balance between effective oxide removal and minimizing the risk of hydrogen contamination. However, it's important to avoid using excessive amounts of nitric acid, as this can slow down the reaction, reduce production efficiency, and produce harmful fumes, complicating the handling process.

Temperature and Time Control

In addition to acid composition, factors such as temperature and pickling time must also be carefully monitored. If the temperature is too high or the process lasts too long, titanium materials can suffer from over-corrosion, which negatively impacts surface quality and overall material properties. Adjusting the pickling process based on the type, thickness, and oxide layer severity of the material is essential for achieving optimal results.

Ensuring High-Quality Results

The acid pickling process for titanium and titanium alloys is both complex and delicate. By strictly controlling the acid composition, solution ratios, and processing parameters, manufacturers can achieve the desired results while avoiding unnecessary damage to titanium materials.
