Discovery of Titanium

Reverend William Gregor (1762-1817): Titanium was discovered in Cornwall, England, in 1791 in the form of a titanium-bearing mineral by Reverend William Gregor, an English amateur mineralogist, who at the time was minister in charge of the parish of Creed in Cornwall. The discoverer was the English amateur mineralogist Reverend William Gregor, who was at the time in charge of the parish of Creed in Cornwall. He found some black sand beside a stream in the neighbouring parish of Manaccan, and later discovered that the sand was attracted to magnets, and he realised that the mineral (ilmenite) contained a new element. After analysing the sand, he found that it contained two metal oxides: iron oxide (the reason why the sand was attracted to the magnet) and a white metal oxide that he could not identify. Realising that this unidentified oxide contained an undiscovered metal, Gregor published the discovery to the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall and the German Annual Review of Chemistry. Around the same time, Franz-Joseph Müller von Reichenstein produced a similar substance, but was unable to recognise it.

Klaproth (Martin Heinrich Klaproth , 1743-1817): In 1795 the German chemist Klaproth also discovered this oxide when analysing red rutile from Hungary. He advocated the naming of uranium (discovered by Klaproth in 1789) and named the new element "Titanium", after the Titanic gods of Greek mythology. In Chinese, the name is titanium according to its transliteration. When he heard of Gregor's earlier discovery, Klaproth obtained samples of the Manakan mineral and confirmed that it contained titanium.
