Does Grade 23 Titanium Alloy Contain Nickel?

Jan 20, 2026

As you research materials for high-end medical or aerospace applications, you'll often see Grade 23 Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) marketed as a nickel-free titanium alloy. That's because international standards such as ASTM F136 and ISO 5832-3 cap nickel at ≤0.01 wt%  (100 ppm); in certified heats, you'll typically measure far less, often below the detection limit.

What's Really in Grade 23?

Element

Typical Range (wt% )

Why It Matters to You

Titanium (Ti)

Balance ≈ 90 %

Lightweight core metal with outstanding corrosion resistance.

Aluminium (Al)

5.5 – 6.5 %

Boosts strength-to-weight ratio.

Vanadium (V)

3.5 – 4.5 %

Improves hardenability and fatigue life.

Nickel (Ni)

≤ 0.01 % (trace only)

Kept ultra-low to avoid nickel allergy concerns.

Oxygen (O)

≤ 0.13 %

Extra-low interstitial (ELI) level increases ductility for implants.

Why Nickel-Free Matters for US & UK Markets

Nickel allergy affects ~10 % of adults in North America and Europe. The U.S. FDA's research on metal reactions in implants highlights nickel as a prime culprit in adverse events. High-authority reference: FDA-Biological Responses to Metal Implants- deep-dive science for your regulatory team. Choosing Grade 23 helps you:

Protect patients and brand reputation – fewer allergic reactions mean happier surgeons and regulatory reviewers.

Simplify CE / UK CA & FDA submissions – biocompatibility data are easier when Ni < 100 ppm.

Market nickel-free devices – a powerful search term for both buyers and endusers browsing Google or Bing.

Don't Confuse Grade 23 with Nitinol

Shape-memory Ti-Ni alloys (nitinol) run ~50 wt% % nickel – great for stents and guidewires, but different chemistry. If you need a rigid, structural bar or plate for load-bearing implants, Grade 23 is the safer, nickel-minimal option.

Conclusion: GR23 titanium alloy does not contain nickel as an alloy component, and nickel may only exist in the form of extremely small amounts of impurities (<0.01%), which meets the medical material standards. If you need a specific experimental report, you can refer to the certification data of ASTM F136 or the composition analysis of a third-party testing agency (such as EDX or ICP-MS).
