Description
Niobium is categorized as a transition metal in the periodic table of elements. It is usually found in nature with tantalum; thus it mimics many of its properties. It has a melting point of 2,468°C, a density of 8.57 g/cc, and a vapor pressure of 10 -4 Torr at 2,287°C. Although the color is usually metallic gray, it is known to take on a bluish tint when exposed to air. It is used in various superconducting alloys and is a common element in jewelry production. Niobium, its compounds and alloys are vaporized under vacuum to make semiconductors, optics and wear-resistant coatings.
