C103 is the most commonly used high-temperature alloy in aerospace. For example, alloy C-103 (Nb-10Hf-1Ti-0.7Zr) was used as the material for the rocket nozzles of the Apollo lunar module and the command module.
The nozzles were subjected to a wall temperature of 1500 degrees Celsius and a high velocity (maximum Mach 4.58) stream of combustion products.
C103 (Nb-10Hf-1Ti-0.5Zr) is the most widely used alloy in the United States. The operating temperature range is between 1200 and 1400 degrees Celsius. It is a low strength niobium alloy.
More than 90% of the niobium alloys used in the United States are medium to high-strength niobium alloys with a tungsten content of 10% to 30%. Their high-temperature strength ranges from 77 MPa at 1410 degrees Celsius to 372 MPa at 1315 degrees Celsius.
