ASTM B392 Niobium Alloy Bar
Niobium (Nb), formerly known as columbium, is a chemical element with an atomic number of 41. It is primarily a ductile, grey, soft transition metal.
Description
Applications for niobium include welding, the nuclear industry, electronics, optics, coins and jewellery. In the latter two applications, niobium's low toxicity and ability to be coloured by anodising are particular advantages. Coating glass with ultrafine niobium powder improves the glass' ability to transmit light without absorbing or refracting it. The coating also makes the glass more resistant to glare. Niobium-coated glass is used in camera lenses as well as TV and computer screens.
Products Description
The forming properties of niobium and niobium alloys should be similar to those of copper and certain mild steels. Sometimes copper blanks are tried before using niobium. Niobium sheet metal can be easily formed without special machining techniques. The low work-hardening rate of niobium facilitates these operations. When using niobium and its alloys, two unusual characteristics must be considered. Firstly, due to its high melting point, no significant softening occurs below 752°F (400°C). Also, sheath protection is not practical because the sheath material may be softer than niobium. Niobium has excellent cold working properties. Annealing is required after 90% of the surface has been machined, with a heat treatment of one hour at 1200°C (2192°F) to fully recrystallise the cold-worked material by more than 50%. The annealing must be carried out in an inert atmosphere or preferably in a high vacuum.
