ASTM B777 Tungsten Base High Density Metal

B777 states that Grade 4 is not usable under non-magnetic conditions. Common magnetic tungsten alloys contain a binder of transition metals such as nickel and iron. Common non-magnetic tungsten alloys contain similar binders and transition metals, but require a lower proportion of iron or substitutes.

Description

ASTM B777, "Standard Specification for Tungsten-Based High-Density Metals," and AMS 7725, "Sintered High-Density Tungsten-High-Density Alloys," both define four classes of tungsten alloys that contain a nominal 90 to 97 weight percent (wt%) of tungsten (W). These four classes are pressed, sintered, and in some cases annealed to shape.

Classes 1-3 are typically divided into non-magnetic and magnetic compositions, while Class 4 is typically offered in magnetic compositions only. In addition to ASTM, Elmet offers "modified Class 2" compositions, which are 93% tungsten (W) by weight (wt%) and have some enhanced properties for certain defence applications.

Products Description

The ASTM and AMS specifications differ slightly in the distinction between magnetic and non-magnetic labelling AMS 7725 defines non-magnetic alloys as Type 1 and magnetic alloys as Type 2 In addition, the AMS specification states that Type 1 should be provided if a category is not specified and Type 2 should be provided if a type is not specified Other differences between the ASTM and AMS specifications: AMS 7725 has a special configuration called "sintered and annealed".

Other differences between the ASTM and AMS specifications: AMS 7725 has a special configuration called "sintered and annealed". Sometimes drawings specify "and anneal" when the customer needs enhanced elongation properties or for other reasons. This must include an additional vacuum annealing step. If only a "sintered condition" is specified, no vacuum annealing is required.
