Key Differences Between Gr1 and Gr2 Titanium Bars

The core difference between Gr1 and Gr2 titanium lies in their purity, specifically the content of interstitial elements like oxygen (O) and iron (Fe). These trace elements directly influence the material's mechanical properties.

Gr1 (Grade 1 Titanium): This is the purest of all CP titanium grades. It has the lowest content of interstitial elements, making it the softest and most ductile.

Gr2 (Grade 2 Titanium): Known as the "workhorse" of the industry, Gr2 is the most widely used grade. Its slightly higher content of interstitial elements gives it higher strength compared to Gr1, with slightly reduced ductility.

Here is a comparison of their key properties:

Feature Gr1 Titanium Bar Gr2 Titanium Bar
UNS Grade R50250 R50400
Purity Highest; lowest content of interstitial elements (O, Fe). High; slightly higher interstitial content than Gr1.
Strength Lowest (in terms of tensile and yield strength). Moderate (approx. 25% stronger than Gr1).
Ductility / Formability Best; ideal for cold forming and deep drawing. Good; offers a great combination of formability and strength.
Corrosion Resistance Excellent in oxidizing and mildly reducing media. Excellent; nearly identical to Gr1 in most environments.
Weldability Excellent Excellent
Cost & Availability Slightly higher cost; used for extreme formability needs. Highly cost-effective; the most common and readily available CP grade.

Application Fields

Based on their property differences, Gr1 and Gr2 titanium bars are suited for different applications.

Applications of Gr1 Pure Titanium Bar (UNS R50250):

Due to its supreme ductility and formability, Gr1 is primarily used for components requiring complex stamping, drawing, or bending.

Chemical Processing: Linings for complex reactor vessels, plates for Plate Heat Exchangers (PHEs).

Electrochemistry: Substrates for anodes and cathodes (e.g., in Dimensionally Stable Anodes, DSA).

Medical Sector: Certain surgical implants and medical devices, especially where high plasticity is required.

Architecture & Art: Architectural skins and sculptures with unique shaping requirements.

Deep-Drawn Parts: Any component that requires extensive deep drawing.

Applications of Gr2 Pure Titanium Bar (UNS R50400):

As the versatile "workhorse" grade, Gr2 covers the vast majority of applications for pure titanium.

Chemical & Petrochemical: Piping systems, pressure vessels, heat exchanger tubes, valves, and pump bodies.

Marine Engineering: Desalination equipment, marine hardware, and underwater sensor housings.

Aerospace: Non-structural airframe components like hydraulic tubing and airframe "skins."

Power Generation: Condenser and heat exchanger systems.

Automotive Industry: Exhaust systems for high-performance vehicles.

General Manufacturing: Any application requiring high corrosion resistance and moderate strength.

How to Choose: Gr1 vs. Gr2?

Choose Gr1 when your application's primary consideration is formability (like deep drawing or complex bending), and high strength is not a critical requirement.

Choose Gr2 when you need an optimal balance of strength, formability, weldability, and cost. It is the default and standard choice for the vast majority of industrial applications.

Applicable Standards

The Gr1 and Gr2 titanium bars supplied by Shanghai NIAI Alloy (SNIAlloy) strictly adhere to international standards, ensuring consistent quality and performance.

ASTM B348 / ASME SB-348: Standard Specification for Titanium and Titanium Alloy Bars and Billets. (This is the primary standard for bar products).

ASTM B381 / ASME SB-381: Standard Specification for Titanium and Titanium Alloy Forgings.

AMS 4921: Titanium Bars, Wire, and Forgings (Commercially Pure, Annealed, 55 ksi / 379 MPa Yield Strength), primarily for aerospace applications.

Other International Standards:

DIN: 3.7025 (Gr1), 3.7035 (Gr2)

JIS: H4650 (TR270 for Gr1), H4650 (TR340 for Gr2)
