Mining, Extraction and Smelting of Molybdenum
Feb 26, 2024
Molybdenum (Mo) is an important metallic element commonly used in alloy manufacturing, electronic equipment, chemical catalysts and smelting. The process of mining and refining molybdenum usually involves the following steps:
Processing the ore: Molybdenum is mainly found in molybdenum ores such as molybdenum pyrite, molybdenum sphalerite and molybdenum pyroxene. First, the collected ore is sent to a processing plant for crushing and grinding to better release the molybdenum minerals.
Flotation separation: After grinding, the ore is immersed in an aqueous solution containing specific agents (chemicals that promote the binding of molybdenum minerals to air bubbles). The molybdenum minerals are separated from the other minerals by bubble adsorption and precipitation.
Sintering and roasting: The resulting molybdenum concentrate is transferred to a high-temperature furnace for roasting. During roasting, the sulphides in the molybdenum concentrate are oxidized to sulphur dioxide (SO2) and the molybdenum minerals are converted to the soluble molybdenum trioxide (MoO3).

Extraction by Dissolution: After roasting, the resulting molybdenum trioxide is transferred to a solution for extraction. A common method is to react the molybdenum trioxide with an alkaline solution to produce a soluble molybdate. Subsequently, the purified molybdate is gradually obtained by steps such as extraction, evaporation and crystallization from an aqueous solution.
Reduction refining: The purified molybdate is added to a high-temperature reactor for reduction refining. At high temperatures, the molybdate is reduced to molybdenum metal. Subsequently, the final pure molybdenum product is obtained by vacuum distillation and other purification processes.
The process of mining and refining molybdenum may vary slightly depending on the type of ore, process technology and equipment conditions. In addition, environmental protection is an important factor to be considered in the mining and refining process, and the waste water, gas and solid waste generated need to be handled appropriately in order to minimize the impact on the environment.
