Processing Characteristics
Heat Treatment: It can be strengthened through solution treatment and aging.
Hot Working: Forging, rolling, and other hot working should be performed within the appropriate temperature range. Common forging temperatures are between 925°C - 955°C (1700°F - 1750°F). Care must be taken to control the cooling rate to prevent embrittlement.
Cold Working: It has moderate cold working formability but is more difficult than commercially pure titanium. Intermediate annealing is often required.
Annealing: Stress relief annealing is typically performed at 480°C - 650°C (900°F - 1200°F). Mill annealing is commonly done at 700°C - 800°C (1300°F - 1475°F). The specific process depends on the section size and desired properties.
Aging: Aging treatment is conducted at 480°C - 595°C (900°F - 1105°F) for 2 to 8 hours.
Machinability: Similar to austenitic stainless steel. It requires the use of sharp tools, low cutting speeds, high feed rates, ample cooling, and rigid workpiece support.
