Main Features
High strength-to-weight ratio : Ti-6Al-4V is known for its excellent strength and extremely light weight, with a strength-to-weight ratio far exceeding that of steel, making it particularly attractive in the aerospace and automotive industries.
Excellent corrosion resistance : Titanium has good resistance to a variety of corrosive environments (such as salt water, chemicals and acids), making it particularly suitable for marine and chemical industries.
High heat resistance : Ti-6Al-4V can maintain its high strength and structural integrity at temperatures up to 400°C , making it suitable for applications requiring high-temperature stability.
Biocompatibility : Ti-6Al-4V is biocompatible, making it an ideal material for medical devices and implants, such as orthopedic implants (hip, knee, etc.) and dental implants.

Phase structure and microstructure
Ti-6Al-4V is an α+β type titanium alloy with a two-phase structure:
α phase : Rich in aluminum, providing excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance, and enhancing the stability of materials at high temperatures.
β phase : Contains vanadium, which helps improve the ductility and forgeability of the material while maintaining its strength.
This two-phase structure gives Ti-6Al-4V excellent performance in both high strength and good machinability.
Mechanical properties
The mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V vary depending on different heat treatment and manufacturing processes. The following are typical performance data:
Tensile strength : 895 MPa to 1100 MPa
Yield strength : 828 MPa to 910 MPa
Elongation : 10-15%
Hardness : Typically around Rockwell C 30-40
These data show that Ti-6Al-4V maintains a lightweight design while possessing very high mechanical strength and excellent toughness.
Corrosion resistance
Ti-6Al-4V exhibits excellent performance in a variety of corrosive environments:
Marine environment : It has extremely high corrosion resistance in salt water, so it is widely used in ships, submarines and marine structures.
Chemical industry : It can resist the corrosion of a variety of acidic and alkaline chemicals, making it suitable for use in chemical processing equipment and pipelines.
Aerospace : Its corrosion resistance helps protect aircraft and spacecraft from environmental damage in high humidity and high pressure environments.
Machining performance
Although Ti-6Al-4V has good strength, it is relatively difficult to process due to the special properties of titanium.
Machining : Due to its high strength and low thermal conductivity, machining Ti-6Al-4V requires the use of specialized tools, coolant, and slower cutting speeds to reduce tool wear and prevent excessive heat buildup.
Welding : Ti-6Al-4V has good welding performance, especially suitable for processes such as TIG (tungsten inert gas welding) and electron beam welding . However, the entry of oxygen and nitrogen must be strictly controlled during the welding process, otherwise the performance of the weld will be degraded.
Forging and stamping : It has good forgeability and can be processed with large deformation through hot forging, making it suitable for manufacturing high-strength structural parts.
Heat treatment
The properties of Ti-6Al-4V can be adjusted through different heat treatments:
Annealing : The material is heated to 700°C to 800°C and then slowly cooled to improve toughness and ductility while reducing internal stress.
Quenching and tempering : Quenching and tempering can further improve the strength of materials, but usually at the cost of reduced ductility.
Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) treatment : HIP can eliminate internal pores in materials, improving their density and mechanical properties.
Application Areas
Aerospace : Used to manufacture structural components, engine parts, and landing gear for aircraft and spacecraft, due to their high strength and lightweight characteristics, as well as their ability to maintain stable performance in high-temperature environments.
Medical devices : Due to its good biocompatibility and corrosion resistance, Ti-6Al-4V is used to manufacture various implants, such as orthopedic implants (e.g., artificial hip joints, knee joints) and dental implants.
Marine engineering : Used in shipbuilding and submarine structures to resist saltwater corrosion and maintain strength and stability in deep-sea environments.
Chemical industry : Used to manufacture corrosion-resistant reactors, heat exchangers, valves, and other equipment suitable for handling highly corrosive chemicals.
Automotive Industry : In high-end automobiles, Ti-6Al-4V is used to manufacture high-performance engine components, such as connecting rods and valves.
