What are the precautions for grinding TC4 titanium alloy?

Mar 29, 2024

As the titanium alloy material has a tendency to fill the grinding wheel, thus bringing difficulties to the grinding of titanium alloy rods, TC4 titanium alloy, when grinding, in the interface between the metal and the grinding wheel generated by the higher temperature rise, so that the grinding surface produces high residual stress, at the same time, the surface finish is not ideal.

The following methods can basically solve these difficulties.

(1) select the appropriate grinding wheel, such as silicon carbide grinding wheel, grain size for the medium (60 ~ 80), medium hardness (J ~ M), the surface speed of 700 ~ 1200m/min, alumina (alumina powder or corundum) grinding wheel should be used at lower speeds, for example, 550 ~ 600min. the same requirements of medium grain size.
(2) the use of lower wheel speed and feed rate; due to low wheel speed, less sparks.
(3) Titanium sparks may catch fire when encountering oil mist, but this danger can be reduced by completely submerging the workpiece with oil. Rust-proof aqueous ammonium nitrite solution completely eliminates the risk of fire.
(4) Cooling with buffer or cutting fluid coolant, with ceramic binding agent and chlorinated or sulfurized cutting oil, you can get good results. Whatever type of coolant is used, it should be well filtered to eliminate the "fishtail" staining caused by the recirculation of titanium particles.
