Zirconium flanges are particularly useful in industry because of their resistance to hydrochloric acid, which corrodes at a rate of less than 5 mpy at all concentrations and temperatures above the boiling point. even at 37% HCI, zirconium flanges do not begin to corrode severely until 130°C (266°F). This performance is unmatched by any other engineering metal or alloy except tantalum.

In addition to its impressive performance in hydrochloric acid, zirconium flanges in sulfuric acid can withstand temperatures well above the boiling point and acid concentrations of up to 70%. Only one other metal, tantalum, is comparable to zirconium in nitric acid, where zirconium can be used in all concentrations up to 90% and at temperatures up to 200°C. Zirconium is also resistant to most organic media.
