Zirconium Wire
Zirconium is a hard, lustrous, silver-colored metal extracted from ores (oxides or zirconia, ZrSiO4) by conversion to tetrahalides and then reduction with magnesium. Due to the formation of a stable oxide film, the metal is extremely resistant to corrosion and is unaffected by acids (except HF) and bases.
Description
Due to its corrosion resistance, zirconium is widely used in the chemical industry where corrosive agents are used. In addition, it is used in the construction of nuclear reactors due to its excellent high-temperature properties and its low neutron absorption. The pure metal is also used as a lining for jet engines. Zirconium is used as an alloying element and the resulting alloys have improved mechanical properties. Zirconium oxide (ZrO2) is used as an opacifier in enamels and as a pigment.

The main application of zirconium oxide is in the manufacture of casting crucibles, bricks, ceramics and abrasives, utilizing its excellent strength and high temperature properties. It is strong enough to be used in the manufacture of high precision blades. The chemical properties of zirconium are very similar to those of hafnium. Therefore, conventional chemical processes used to extract zirconium do not remove hafnium, which can be present in commercial-grade zirconium at levels as high as 4.5%. High purity zirconium with hafnium content below 0.01% is used in nuclear applications.
