Zirconium (Zr) is a silver metal with a density of 6.5 g/cm3. zirconium's very small neutron absorption cross-section and relatively high melting point (1855 °C or 3371 °F) make zirconium a high-quality material for nuclear rods. in the 1990's about 90% of the zirconium produced annually was consumed by the nuclear industry.
Description
Zirconium metals and zirconium alloys are advantageous in specialized chemical environments, primarily acetic and hydrochloric acids. The corrosion resistance of zirconium results from the almost instantaneous formation of tightly adherent oxides. For this reason, zirconium has been used to manufacture electrode assemblies, foils, flange bolts, tubes and rods for special applications. Zirconium products also have a wide range of applications in medical devices, such as zirconium implants.
