Zr–Nb alloy is successfully used as structural materials in nuclear reactors.Zr-Nb alloys have been successfully used as structural materials in nuclear reactors. However, the complex in-pile environment leads to corrosion limitations for its wide application.Nb can exist in the oxide layer as Nb 2+, Nb 3+, and Nb 5+, and these oxidation states have different effects on the space charge distribution of the oxide, which in turn affects the oxidation kinetics. The corrosion morphology and the elemental composition of the surface layer of Zr-Nb in high-temperature water and steam depend on the behavior of the β-Nb second-phase particles. The differences are evident under the combined influence of irradiation and material processing. Optimization of Nb concentration, doping elements, adjustment of manufacturing parameters and preparation of protective coatings are feasible ways to improve the corrosion resistance of Zr-Nb alloys.
