ASTM B658 Zirconium and Zirconium Alloy Pipe
Zirconium is a hard, lustrous, silvery-colored metal that, when extracted from its ore (oxide or zircon, ZrSiO4), is first converted to a tetrahalide and then reduced with magnesium.
Description
Zirconium is one of the metal alloys characterised as a reactive or corrosion resistant alloy.
In reducing or oxidising applications, zirconium can withstand high temperatures up to 1200°F. In addition to its high resistance to uniform corrosion, zirconium is effective against pitting, stress and crevice corrosion.
It is commonly specified as a structural material for piping systems used in applications in the chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas processing industries. In these harsh manufacturing environments, processes often use corrosive fluids at very high temperatures. When these fluids come into contact with equipment surfaces, the strength and corrosion resistance of the structural material is severely tested.
Zirconium tubing has excellent corrosion resistance in most organic and inorganic environments, including salt solutions, acids, strong bases, and some molten salts.
Products Description
This specification covers seamless and welded zirconium and zirconium alloy pipes. The pipes are classified into the following three grades: R60702 - unalloyed zirconium, R60704 - zirconium-tin alloy, and R60705 - zirconium-niobium alloy. Seamless pipes shall be manufactured by any seamless method capable of producing a product that meets the specified requirements. Pipes containing welded seams or other welded joints shall comply with the regulations. Pipes shall be supplied in an annealed or stress relieved condition. Materials shall conform to the chemical composition requirements specified. Materials represented by test samples shall conform to the tensile properties specified.
