TC4 Titanium Alloy: The High-Performance Material

Nov 27, 2025

What Is TC4 Titanium Alloy?

TC4 is a titanium alloy based on the nominal Ti-6Al-4V composition.

The "6Al-4V" designation refers to the approximate nominal alloying additions of 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. Aluminum stabilizes the alpha phase, while vanadium stabilizes the beta phase, giving TC4 its characteristic α+β microstructure.

This combination provides a balance of:

High tensile strength

High strength-to-weight ratio

Low density

Excellent corrosion resistance

Good fatigue resistance

Good fracture toughness

Good weldability

Good overall thermal stability

TC4 is therefore not simply selected for maximum strength. Its major advantage is the combination of strength, weight, corrosion resistance, and manufacturability in a single titanium alloy.

FAQ

Is TC4 the same as Ti-6Al-4V?

TC4 is commonly used to designate the Ti-6Al-4V alloy in Chinese standards. Ti-6Al-4V is also commonly associated with ASTM Grade 5 / UNS R56400. The exact applicable specification should still be confirmed for each product.

Is TC4 titanium strong?

Yes. TC4 provides high tensile and yield strength while maintaining a relatively low density, giving it an excellent strength-to-weight ratio.

What is TC4 titanium used for?

TC4 is widely used in aerospace, chemical processing, marine equipment, medical components, automotive applications, fasteners, and CNC machined parts.

Is TC4 corrosion resistant?

Yes. TC4 has excellent corrosion resistance in many environments because titanium forms a protective passive oxide layer.

Is TC4 suitable for CNC machining?

Yes. TC4 is commonly CNC machined, but it requires appropriate tooling, cutting parameters, coolant, and machine rigidity because Ti-6Al-4V is relatively difficult to machine.

What is the density of TC4 titanium?

The density of Ti-6Al-4V is approximately 4.43–4.45 g/cm³, depending on the reference and specification.

What is the difference between TC4 and Grade 5 titanium?

TC4 and Grade 5 are commonly used designations for the Ti-6Al-4V alloy system. TC4 is the Chinese designation, while Grade 5 is the ASTM designation. The applicable product standard must be verified before treating them as interchangeable.

Can TC4 be welded?

Yes. TC4 can be welded, but proper inert-gas shielding and contamination control are essential to maintain weld quality.

Is TC4 suitable for heat exchangers?

TC4 can be considered for specialized heat-transfer applications, but commercially pure titanium Grade 2 is also widely used for heat exchanger and condenser tubing. The appropriate grade depends on the required strength, corrosion resistance, forming characteristics, and operating environment.
