Titanium Alloy Rolling Process
Sep 25, 2024
Titanium rolling process is a key step in the production of titanium alloys, which directly affects the microstructure and macroscopic properties of the material. The following are some key points of titanium alloy rolling process:
Rolling temperature control:
The rolling temperature window of titanium alloys is narrow and the thermal conductivity is poor, so the control of slab temperature is very critical. Open rolling temperature is too high or rolling deformation is too large may lead to a sharp rise in the temperature of the central region of the rolled parts, causing plastic deterioration and uneven rolling.
Multi-pass rolling:
Rolling of titanium alloy plate usually requires multiple passes of hot rolling, which is suitable for controlling the microstructure and properties of the material, and an annealing treatment may be required between each pass to restore the plasticity of the material.
The rate of undercutting is distributed:
During rolling, the distribution of the underpressure rate has a significant effect on the anisotropy of the material. For example, when the cross and longitudinal rolling passes are assigned a 1:1 ratio, the anisotropy of the material is virtually eliminated.
Rolling speed:
Rolling speed affects the temperature distribution of the slab, which in turn affects rolling quality and productivity. In the open rolling stage, in order to prevent accidents caused by biting into the general use of low speed; with the thinning of the rolled parts, rolling speed can be increased, but usually does not exceed a certain value.

Rolling equipment:
The use of advanced rolling equipment, such as fast traverse reversible units, continuous rolling units, precision mills and modular mills, can improve rolling efficiency and product quality.
Automated control system
Develop full automatic control system for the whole process, realise temperature-controlled rolling automated production, and improve the automation and intelligence level of the production process.
New rolling process
The use of three-roll Y-type mill instead of the traditional two-roll mill can realise single-line torsion-free micro-tension rolling and improve rolling speed.
Rolling window is determined:
Determine the rolling temperature window of hot rolled titanium alloy through experiments and simulation analysis to provide a basis for the development of hot rolling process regulations.
Billet preparation:
Pure titanium and low-alloyed alloy grades can be supplied with billets in the form of die forging, rolling billets or flat ingots, while high-alloyed alloy grades need to be free forged.
Rolling procedure development:
The development of rolling regulations, including billet design, under pressure system, speed system, temperature system, etc., need to take into account the material properties, equipment capacity and production efficiency.
