Titanium Grade 2 (pure titanium) and Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V alloy) are two of the most widely used titanium grades, but their properties and applications vary drastically.

Titanium Grade 2 (UNS R50400)

Type : Commercially pure (CP) titanium (α-phase structure).

Composition : ≥99.2% titanium, with oxygen (≤0.25%), iron (≤0.30%) and carbon (≤0.08%) as primary impurities.

Standards : ASTM B265 (sheet/plate), ASTM B338 (pipe).

 

Titanium Grade 5 (UNS R56400)

Type : Alpha-beta titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V).

Composition : 90% titanium, 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium.

Standards : ASTM B348 (rods/bars), AMS 4928 (aviation).

Corrosion resistance

Grade 2 : Exceptional resistance to chlorides, acids (e.g. nitric, acetic) and seawater. Ideal for chemical processing and marine environments.

Grade 5 : Slightly reduced corrosion resistance due to alloying elements but still outperforms stainless steel. Avoid reducing acids (e.g. HCl).

 

Temperature performance

Grade 2 : Loses strength above 300°C (572°F). Maximum operating temperature: 400°C (752°F).

Grade 5 : Retains 80% of room temperature strength at 450°C (842°F). Used in jet engines and high temperature exhaust systems.
