Titanium Grade 2 and 5 Titanium comparison
Jan 16, 2026
Thanks to our years of experience and extensive knowledge, we are in a unique position to help clients choose the right metals for a wide range of projects. Today we want to have a look at titanium bar and sawn plate in grade 2 and 5. We'll do a quick comparison of the two grades so you can see which is best for you.
Composition
To begin with, Grade 2 is known as a commercially pure titanium. In this case it will be at least 99.2% Ti. The remainder will be small amounts of carbon, iron, oxygen, and nitrogen.
Grade 5 is different because it is an alloy. While the majority is still Ti, the metal also includes 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium, and smaller traces of iron, carbon, and oxygen.

Corrosion resistance
Most people know that titanium is fantastic when it comes to its ability to resist corrosion. Grade 2 is good here, scoring 3 out of 5 and offering excellent resistance to various corrosive environments. However, Grade 5 does better with a 4 out of 5. This comes from the aluminium added to the alloy. So, if you choose titanium bar and sawn plate in Grade 2 and 5, you can create parts that will have protection against corrosion.
Mechanical properties
Grade 2 has properties that make it useful for a wide array of applications. For example, it has good tensile and yield strength (50 ksi and 40 ksi respectively). At the same time, it has low density, is lightweight, and has good ductility.
In comparison, Grade 5 has massively higher tensile and yield strength (130 ksi and 120 ksi). It is also denser, making it heavier. It does have less ductility though. If you need a stronger grade with high-stress resistance, this is the one for you.

Processing
The properties of Grade 2 mean it is very easy to work with. You can form and shape it using a number of techniques. Grade 5 is harder, so is more challenging. You will need special machining techniques to adapt it.
Cost
Finally, it is a good idea to look at the differences in price. Grade 2 has the advantage here and is cheaper to purchase. Grade 5 is more expensive because of the alloying content.
