Applications Of Tantalum Alloys

Tantalum is used to make a variety of ductile alloys with high melting points. These alloys are used as materials for superhard metal working tools and to make high-temperature alloys used in jet engines, chemical laboratory equipment, nuclear reactors, and missiles.[43][44] Tantalum is highly ductile and can be stretched into wires. [43][44] Tantalum is highly malleable and can be stretched into wires. These tantalum wires are used to gasify various metals, such as aluminum. Tantalum can resist biological fluids without irritating tissues, so it is widely used to make surgical tools and implants. For example, tantalum can bond directly to hard tissues, so a number of skeletal implants are coated with porous tantalum.

Tantalum is resistant to corrosion by almost all acids except hydrofluoric acid and hot sulfuric acid. Tantalum can therefore be used as a material for chemical reaction vessels as well as for catheters for corrosive liquids. The heat exchange coils used in the heating process of hydrochloric acid are made of tantalum.[46] Tantalum is also used in the heating process of hydrochloric acid. The production of tubes for UHF radio transmitters uses large quantities of tantalum, which traps oxygen and nitrogen in the tubes to form oxides and nitrides, respectively, to maintain the required high vacuum.
