Can I Use Gr1 Titanium Tubing in Hydrochloric Acid?
Apr 09, 2024
Gr1 titanium will react slowly with dilute hydrochloric acid, but during the reaction it will gradually form an oxidized film that protects the titanium metal, thus reducing the reaction to a halt.
Another characteristic of titanium is corrosion resistance, is due to its affinity for oxygen is particularly large, can generate a layer of dense oxide film on its surface, can protect titanium from medium corrosion. Titanium metal can generate a purified oxide film on its surface in most aqueous solutions.
Therefore, titanium in acidic, alkaline, neutral saline solution and and oxidizing media with good stability, than the existing stainless steel and other non-ferrous metals corrosion resistance are good, and even comparable to platinum. However, if in a certain medium, can continuously dissolve the oxide film on the surface of titanium, then titanium in this medium will be corroded.
For example, titanium in hydrofluoric acid, concentrated or hot hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid, because these solutions dissolve the titanium surface oxide film, so titanium is corroded. If an oxidizing agent or certain metal ions are added to these solutions, the oxide film on the surface of titanium is protected, and the stability of titanium increases.
