New Uses For Titanium And Titanium Alloys.

Jan 16, 2024

Titanium alloys were widely used in the aerospace industry in the early days, mainly for the production of aircraft engines or pneumatic components. Later, with the continuous development of technology, titanium alloys have entered the lives of ordinary people, and they are also found in factories or household equipment. Today, countries and organizations are competing to develop new titanium alloys characterized by low cost and high performance. In recent years, the new development of titanium alloy is mainly focused on the following six aspects.

(1) Medical titanium alloys

Titanium alloy has low density and good biocompatibility. It is an ideal material for medical use and can even be implanted into the human body. Titanium alloys used in the medical field contain vanadium and aluminum, which may be harmful to the human body. However, not long ago, Japanese scholars developed a new titanium alloy with good biocompatibility. However, this alloy has not yet realized mass production. It is believed that in the near future, this high-quality alloy can be widely used in daily life.

(2) Flame retardant titanium alloy

Titanium-based alloys that can resist combustion under certain pressure, temperature and air flow are resistance titanium alloys. The U.S., Russia and China have developed new titanium alloys, of which the U.S. has applied these titanium alloys to engines. As these titanium alloys are insensitive to combustion, the stability of the engine can be greatly improved.

(3) High strength and high toughness β-type

β-type titanium alloys are characterized by high strength, good weldability, and excellent hot and cold processing performance. Using this law, the researchers make the characteristics of β-type titanium alloy very obvious: good hot working performance, good plasticity and good welding performance. And its mechanical properties are greatly improved by solid solution-ageing treatment. At present, Japan and Russia have prepared such titanium alloys.

(4) Titanium aluminum compounds

Compared with general-purpose titanium alloys, titanium-aluminum compounds have high-temperature performance, good oxidation and creep resistance, and lower density than general-purpose titanium alloys. These excellent properties are destined to create a new alloy boom of titanium aluminum compounds. This new titanium-aluminum alloy has been synthesized in the United States, and has entered mass production.

(5) High-temperature titanium alloy

The fast solidification method and powder metallurgy method combined with the use of fiber or particle reinforced composite materials prepared titanium alloy has excellent high temperature mechanical properties. High-temperature titanium alloy temperature limit is much higher than ordinary titanium alloy. At present, the United States has prepared a new type of high-temperature titanium alloy.

(6)Titanium-nickel alloy

Alloys composed of titanium and nickel are called "memory alloys". This alloy is made into a predetermined shape, molding, if deformed by the role of external forces, a little heating can be restored to its original form. This alloy is used in a variety of fields such as instrumentation and electronic equipment.
