I. Selected Welding Methods
When welding titanium and titanium alloys, the choice of method is crucial. For thin plates of less than 3 mm, tungsten arc welding is recommended, and its delicate control ensures a flawless weld. For plates over 3 mm, fusion electrode tig welding is preferred for its efficient melting ability. In addition, advanced technologies such as Submerged Arc Welding and Vacuum Electron Beam Welding are also available options, but decisions need to be made based on specific needs.
Second, meticulous pre-welding preparation
Surface cleaning:
Mechanical cleaning: use fine sandpaper or stainless steel wire brush, or even carbide scraper, thoroughly remove the welding area of the oxide film and impurities.
Chemical cleaning: Utilize a specific ratio of acid cleaning solution (such as HF + HNO3 mixture) for deep cleaning, followed by rinsing and drying with clean water to ensure that the surface is free of residue.
Equipment & Materials:
DC argon arc welding power source with high-frequency arc initiation and stable external characteristics is selected to ensure the stability of the welding process.
The purity of argon gas needs to be 99.99% or more, and must be continuously supplied until the weld is completely cooled to prevent oxidation.
Welding wire should be matched with the composition of the base material, or according to the demand for slightly lower strength wire to improve the plasticity of the weld.
Third, carefully operated welding process
Gas protection: Use a special protective mask to ensure that the weld zone and the weld are free from harmful gases, while controlling the temperature below 250℃.
Careful operation: keep small angle between the welding wire and the weldment, feed it into the molten pool smoothly, and avoid large lateral swing to ensure the uniformity and quality of the weld.
Continuous protection: When the arc is broken and the weld is closed, continue to pass argon gas to protect until the weld and the heat-affected zone are cooled to a safe temperature.

Fourth, strict weld inspection
By observing the color of the weld, you can initially judge the quality of welding. Ideal weld should be silver-white or light yellow, deep yellow and gold-purple according to the weld grade has a different degree of acceptance, while the dark blue indicates that the welding quality is not qualified.
Fifth, not to be ignored considerations
Strict control of welding parameters to ensure the stability of the welding process and weld quality.
Maintain the cleanliness of the welding environment to prevent contaminants from entering the welding area.
Welding personnel need to be professionally trained, proficient in the welding characteristics of titanium and titanium alloys and operating specifications.
By following the above steps and precautions, you will be able to realize the perfect welding of titanium and titanium alloys.
