Titanium And Titanium Alloy Rods, Wires And Profiles Rolling Process And Mill Classification

Oct 14, 2024

Titanium and titanium alloy bars, in addition to the common forging production methods, for the diameter of less than 100mm bars, wire and profiles, hole rolling method is often used. During the rolling process, the material is plastically deformed by the rolling force between the rotating rolls. The following are the characteristics of bar, wire and section rolling and the classification and characteristics of rolling mills:
Characteristics of bar, wire and profile rolling
Uneven deformation: due to the differences in the shape of the rolled parts and holes, the natural extension of the rolled parts in the direction of the width of the points are not consistent, resulting in uneven deformation.
Overheating phenomenon: the thermal conductivity of titanium is low, when the deformation rate is fast, the area of intense deformation is prone to overheating.
Production efficiency and cost: fire sub-deformation, high production efficiency, but the rolling tool is more complex, more suitable for mass production. For titanium alloy profiles with many varieties of specifications and small batch sizes, due to the need to frequently replace different specifications and shapes of holes, and adjust the rolling mill, resulting in higher production costs, so titanium alloy profiles are mostly not used in hole rolling.

Transverse spread: the transverse spread of titanium and titanium alloys is larger than that of steel.
Classification of rolling mills and their characteristics
Cross-row rolling mill
Arrangement: the racks are arranged transversely, and multiple racks are mostly driven by one motor, or can be driven by two motors respectively.
Number of rolls: a rack usually has two or three rolls.
Characteristics: simple equipment, plant covers an area of small, less investment, easy to operate, adaptable. However, the product size accuracy is poor, the rolling interval is long, the cooling is more powerful, the length of the rolled parts is limited, the weight of a single piece is small. Suitable for open billet rolling and small batch multi-specification rolling.
Longitudinal continuous rolling mill
Arrangement: the racks are arranged longitudinally, and the axes of the rolls of the front and rear racks are configured at 90°.
Driving mode: each stand is driven by a single motor.
Features: high speed rolling can be realized, the temperature drop of the rolled parts is small, or even instead of heating, high dimensional accuracy, and the single weight of the rolled parts can be up to several hundred kilograms. But the plant covers an area of large, large investment, adjusting the rolling time is long, suitable for mass production.
According to the main extension and the work of the roll axis of mutual position relationship classification
Longitudinal axis: the main extension and roll axis perpendicular, including transverse rolling mill, longitudinal continuous rolling mill, Pilger mill (can be used for cold rolling of bars), asynchronous rolling mill.
Slant axis: mature three-roll planetary slant rolling, which is characterized by road deformation is very large, the rack rotation, the rolling piece only for translation, the rolling piece can be curled, rolling piece size, surface quality is good.
Classification by deformation
Periodic: cold rolling Pilger mill, hot rolling asynchronous mill. Asynchronous rolling road deformation is uniform, the same section of the organization is more uniform, simple equipment. However, the length of the rolling pieces is limited, and the rolling time is longer, the temperature drop is larger, resulting in greater differences in the organization and performance of the length of the rolling pieces.
Continuous: including transverse rolling mill, longitudinal rolling mill, planetary inclined rolling mill.
In summary, titanium and titanium alloy bars, wires, profiles of rolling process and the choice of rolling mill needs to be based on specific production requirements, product specifications and batch size and other factors for comprehensive consideration.
