Astm b338 covers 28 grades of seamless and welded titanium alloy tubes for surface condensers, evaporators and heat exchangers. Seamless tubes shall be made from hollow billets by any cold-rolling or cold-drawing process which will produce a product conforming to the specified requirements. Welded tubes shall be made from flat rolled product by an automatic electric arc welding process. Welded pipe shall be sufficiently cold-worked to final dimensions so that the cast weld microstructure is transformed to the isometric microstructure typical in welds during subsequent heat treatment. Titanium shall conform to the chemical requirements specified. The room temperature tensile properties of the pipe in its normal state of supply shall be as specified. Tubes shall be capable of withstanding flattening without rupture under a load applied gradually at room temperature until the distance between load platens does not exceed the required height. Welded pipe shall be tested for reverse flattening in accordance with Test Methods Supplement II and Definition A 370. Welded pipe shall be tested by non-destructive electromagnetic and ultrasonic test methods. Seamless pipe and welded/cold-finished pipe shall be tested using ultrasonic test methods. Welded pipe shall be tested using hydrostatic or pneumatic test methods. Seamless pipe shall be tested using electromagnetic or hydrostatic or pneumatic test methods.
