Grade 5 titanium, also known as Ti-6Al-4V, is an alpha+beta type titanium alloy that is used in many industrial applications due to its superior strength-to-weight ratio, good corrosion resistance, and weldability.
Description
Grade 5 titanium alloy contains approximately 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium, and these alloying elements give it excellent mechanical properties, including high strength (comparable to some steels), excellent fatigue resistance, and moderate toughness. In addition, it is resistant to a wide range of corrosive media, including seawater, chlorides, and a variety of acid and alkali solutions.

Although titanium alloy welding is more challenging than ordinary carbon or stainless steel, Grade 5 titanium alloy has better weldability. It needs to be welded under inert gas protection, such as argon (TIG or MIG welding), to prevent oxidation and minimize contamination. Proper preheating, welding process control and post-weld heat treatment are essential to prevent cracks, reduce welding residual stresses and ensure the quality of welded joints.
