Titanium Seamless Tubing Grade 4

What Grade 4 Is

Grade 4 is the highest-strength grade among the four commercially pure (CP) titanium grades. It is not an alloy: it contains no intentional aluminum, chromium or molybdenum additions. Its higher strength comes from a higher oxygen content (maximum 0.40%) - oxygen dissolves interstitially and strengthens the metal without alloying elements.

Mechanical and Physical Properties

Tensile >=550 MPa (typical 550-700 MPa, annealed); yield >=480 MPa; elongation >=15%.

Density 4.51 g/cm3; melting point ~1668°C (approx); elastic modulus ~105-120 GPa.

Conductivity (corrected): titanium is a relatively poor conductor - about 3% IACS, far below copper or aluminum; do not specify Grade 4 for electrical or thermal duty.

Corrosion Resistance

Outstanding in oxidizing acids, seawater and most chemical media thanks to the dense, self-healing TiO2 film. As with all CP titanium, avoid long-term exposure to hot reducing acids and crevice conditions - in those services consider Grade 7/16/17.

 

Applications

Chemical processing: piping, vessels, heat exchangers, reactors.

Power generation: condensers and cooling-water tubing.

Marine: structures and equipment in seawater service.

Medical: instruments and non-implant hardware (load-bearing implants usually use titanium alloys).

Aerospace: structural components and fasteners - not turbine blades or combustion hardware, which require heat-resistant alloys.

Industrial: fasteners, fittings and components needing CP-titanium corrosion resistance at maximum unalloyed strength.

 

Selection Guidance

Choose Grade 4 when you need the maximum strength from unalloyed titanium. For higher strength still, move to Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) or Grade 23 (ELI). For forming-heavy designs, Grades 1-2 offer better ductility.
