Description
1. Overview
Grade 2 is the workhorse grade of commercially pure titanium (CP-2). Due to its excellent properties, titanium is widely used in aviation, aerospace, chemical industry, petroleum, metallurgy, light industry, electric power, seawater desalination, ships and daily-life appliances. Within the CP family, Grade 2 offers the best overall balance of corrosion resistance, formability, weldability and cost, which is why it is the most commonly specified titanium grade for industrial tubing.

5. Manufacturing and Quality
Grade 2 welded tubes are produced from titanium strip that is roll-formed and longitudinally welded by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG) under strict inert gas shielding, because molten titanium absorbs oxygen and nitrogen readily, which embrittles the weld. After welding the tube is sized and annealed or stress-relieved. The weld seam is verified by 100% eddy current or ultrasonic testing, and the finished tube is hydrostatically tested per ASTM B862.
6. Grade 1-5 Comparison (Corrected)
Grades 1 to 4 are commercially pure titanium - they contain no alloying elements and differ in strength, which is developed through controlled oxygen and iron content. Grade 5 is the Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

The original page described Grades 2-5 as containing alloying elements such as aluminum, manganese, silicon, vanadium, chromium, nickel, copper, tin and zirconium, and attributed aeroengine blade and compressor impeller service to pure titanium. Those statements are incorrect: only Grade 5 carries alloying additions (aluminum and vanadium), and rotating aeroengine parts are made of titanium alloys, not commercially pure titanium. The table above reflects the standard ASTM classification.
