Forming Titanium Sheet Metal
The titanium sheet is loaded in a die already heated at forming temperature, the die is closed by a cover. When the sheet is at forming temperature gas pressure, generally argon, is applied following a defined pressure cycle in order to inflate the part until complete contact between part and die surface.

Titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-4V or Ti-6242) are widely used in commercial and military aircraft, primarily for high temperature applications such as engine nacelles, pylons or corrosive environments. Although these alloys have excellent mechanical, physical and chemical properties, their main technical drawback is their poor corrosion resistance in high temperature environments. The major technical drawback of these alloys is their poor room temperature moldability. One of the solutions to overcome this obstacle is molding at elevated temperatures between 650 and 950°C, depending on the geometry of the part. Considering that parts based on sheet molding are generally between 0.6 and 6 mm thick, the aerospace industry usually employs two main processes: superplastic forming (SPF) and thermoforming (HF).
