Description
Carbon steel has excellent machinability and is suitable for conventional CNC turning, milling, and drilling operations. Mild steel offers particularly outstanding cutting performance, making it suitable for efficient machining. However, carbon steel is susceptible to oxidation, especially during high-temperature machining, necessitating protective measures such as applying rust-inhibiting oil or using shielding gas during machining. Mild steel has lower hardness and strength and is suitable for manufacturing low-load, non-critical parts. Medium- and high-carbon steels offer greater strength and hardness and are suitable for components subject to higher loads.

Commonly used carbon steel materials for machining:
1018 steel is generally considered a low-carbon steel. Its primary components are iron, carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur. Its greatest advantage is its excellent weldability, making it the preferred material for carbonized CNC steel parts. However, welding is most effective only after carbonization. 1045 steel is a medium-carbon steel composed of iron, carbon, silicon, manganese, and either sulfur or phosphorus. It's one of the most widely used steel grades in CNC steel machining, its strength and toughness making it suitable for a wide range of projects, particularly those requiring high water resistance.
