Tantalum Wire
The pure metal is used in the electronics industry to make various types of electronic devices (e.g. rectifiers, capacitors, filaments, etc.). Tantalum is also used in vacuum systems because of its high absorption of residual gases. It is also used as an alloying element, for example with nickel and molybdenum to produce alloys with good corrosion resistance, strength and ductility.
Description
Tantalum was discovered in 1802 by AG Ekeberg in Uppsala, Sweden. Tantalum is a shiny silver-colored metal that is heavy, dense, ductile and malleable when pure. It is found in small amounts in minerals (usually together with niobium) and is separated by conversion to oxides and then to the fluorine complex K2TaF₇, from which the pure metal is then obtained by electrolysis.
Products Description
Due to the formation of an oxide film, Tantalum is extremely corrosion-resistant and is also resistant to acids (except HF). At high temperatures it reacts with molten alkalis and a variety of non-metals. Tantalum can be used as a substitute for platinum in laboratory equipment, which must have good corrosion resistance, and for similar reasons the metal is also used in the chemical industry. Fluids in the human body do not react with the metal, so its use in surgical implants does not cause rejection. Other applications include the use of tantalum carbide in cemented carbides used as cutting tools.
