What Grade 23 Is
Grade 23 titanium - Ti-6Al-4V ELI - is the extra-low-interstitial version of the most widely used alpha-beta titanium alloy, Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V). It has the same basic composition, but the interstitial elements (oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen) are held to much lower maximums, which improves fracture toughness, ductility at low temperatures, and biocompatibility.

The "ELI" designation refers specifically to these tight interstitial limits - oxygen is the element that most affects toughness and ductility.

Density 4.43 g/cm3; elastic modulus ~105-120 GPa.
Better fracture toughness and ductility than Grade 5, especially at cryogenic temperatures.

Selection Note
Choose Grade 5 when standard alpha-beta strength is enough and cost matters. Choose Grade 23 when the specification demands extra-low interstitials - implant applications, cryogenic service, or higher fracture toughness. Both grades weld with full inert-gas shielding; confirm filler and process with the manufacturer.
