3 Reasons To Choose Titanium Bicycle Frames
Jan 12, 2024
Reason 1: Compared to other metal materials
Titanium bicycle frames not only weigh only 50% of steel, but also have a strength-to-weight ratio of 28.4% higher than chromium-molybdenum steel. grade 9 titanium frames have a fatigue limit that is twice as high as that of steel, and aluminum alloy frames can't compete with titanium frames in this regard, even after a long period of use. As a high-strength, low-density titanium alloy material applied to bicycle frames, it not only makes the frame lightweight and strong, but also makes the frame more durable.
Aluminum Frame Performance
Aluminum is a less elastic and less rigid material. Its specific gravity is light, but not hard enough. It is alloyed and heat-treated to increase strength. Many aluminum frames are made from 6061 T6. the T6 symbol indicates heat treatment and aging. Without heat treating, the strength is only 1/2, or 1/5. usually smaller factories can't afford heat treating equipment. There are also 7005 and 7075 aluminum alloys that are commonly used in the production of bike frames. 7005 alloy cannot match the strength of 7075 alloy.
Aluminum itself is a metal that corrodes very easily. The more you ride a bicycle made of this material, the more stress is created and the more significant the change in strength becomes. In recent years, many frames have been made of thin materials (lightness has reached its limit) in order to achieve lightness, and their service life can be greatly affected.
CrMo steel frame properties
Bicycle frames made from chromium-molybdenum steel were the first materials used for bicycle frames. It has good machinability, is easy to weld and is relatively inexpensive. It is mainly used for the production of low-grade bicycle frames. The prominent disadvantages are easy to rust and metal fatigue (metal fatigue due to stress concentration) affects the strength of the frame. When metal fatigue reaches a certain level, the frame may undergo sudden and destructive fracture.

Reason 2, compared with carbon fiber material
Carbon fiber frames are characterized by "lightness, no bending, and good vibration damping". However, it is not technically easy to make full use of the excellent properties of carbon fiber, and the quality of carbon fiber materials varies greatly among manufacturers. Considering the cost, it is unlikely that bicycle manufacturers will use premium carbon fiber for their frames.
Carbon fiber is a material made by curing carbon fibers with resin. It is very light, but it is a directional material (strong in tensile strength but weak in shear), so complex stress calculations are required for processing to address the shortcomings of the thin-layer overlap method. Compared with titanium alloy material, as the ideal material for producing high-end bicycle frames, the current market trend has gradually become the mainstream of high-end frame production.
(1) The strength of carbon fiber frame will be greatly reduced if the external force acts at an angle with the fiber, and cracks are easily produced.
(2)The resin added in the curing process of carbon fiber frame has the problem of aging, and the wind and sun will gradually affect the performance of the frame.
(3) Carbon fiber frames are one piece after curing in the mold. The cost of the mold is quite high, and the factory is unable to meet the customized service of the customers.
(4) Carbon fiber cannot be repaired if it breaks after the frame is made.
Reasons III. Advantages of Titanium Alloy
(1) The titanium alloy frame of the ferry company has a strength and weight ratio of more than 75% higher than that of the general steel and aluminum frames.
(2) The fatigue life of Ferry Company's titanium frames is 5 times higher than that of ordinary steel and aluminum frames, which means it will be with you for a long time.
(3) For each frame design, we strive to show the unique charm of titanium frames, focusing on the perfect combination of aesthetics, lightweight and strength design.
(4) When you ride for up to 5 hours, you will feel the vibration and impact of the road surface more directly on your body through the frame when you use other materials. Then you will prefer the feeling of a titanium frame after a long ride.
(5) Its superior corrosion resistance and long life.
