The tensile strength of titanium and its alloys ranges from 30,000 psi to 200,000 psi (210-1380 MPa), which is equivalent to the strength of most alloy steels. Titanium is only 56% as dense as steel, and its corrosion resistance is comparable to that of platinum. Of all the elements in the earth's crust, titanium is the ninth most abundant. Titanium has a melting point of 3,135°F (1,725°C). This melting point is about 400°F (220°C) higher than that of steel and about 2000°F (1100°C) higher than that of aluminum. It also has a very thin conductive oxide surface film and a hard, smooth surface that limits adhesion of foreign objects.
