Grade 1 titanium is the first of four industrially pure titanium grades. It is the softest and most ductile of these grades. It has maximum formability, excellent corrosion resistance and high impact toughness. Grade TA1 is the material of choice for any application that requires easy formability and is typically available as titanium plate and titanium tubing.

What is GR1 titanium?

Pure titanium Grade 1 is characterized by very good ductility and, as a result, very good cold formability, which makes the material suitable for deep drawing. Titanium Grade 1 is known for its excellent general and seawater corrosion resistance and offers high corrosion resistance in oxidizing, neutral and mildly reducing media (solutions) including chlorides.
Titanium's low density (about half that of nickel-based alloys), high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance make it an ideal material for many corrosive chemical environments.

What is GR1 Titanium?
GR1 (Grade 1) is commercially pure, unalloyed titanium with a minimum titanium content of 99.5%. It is the most ductile and corrosion-resistant grade among pure titanium alloys, making it ideal for applications where forming and corrosion resistance are critical.

 

Can GR1 titanium be welded?
Yes, GR1 has excellent weldability. Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG) with high-purity argon shielding is the standard method. Proper cleaning and shielding are essential to prevent oxidation and maintain corrosion resistance.

 

Does GR1 titanium work harden?
Yes, like most pure metals, GR1 can work-harden during cold forming or machining. Intermediate annealing may be required for severe deformation operations to restore ductility and prevent cracking.

 

Can GR1 be heat-treated for higher strength?
No, GR1 is a non-heat-treatable alloy. Its strength is derived from cold working. Annealing is the only thermal process used to relieve stresses and soften the material after cold working.

 

Is GR1 titanium suitable for medical implants?
Yes, GR1 is widely used for permanent and temporary medical implants (e.g., bone plates, screws, cranial meshes) due to its excellent biocompatibility, corrosion resistance in bodily fluids, and non-toxic nature.

 

How does GR1 compare to GR2 titanium?
GR1 has lower strength but higher ductility and corrosion resistance than GR2. GR2 is more widely used for general-purpose applications, while GR1 is chosen for the most demanding corrosive environments or where severe forming is required.
