Hot forming is quickly becoming the preferred method for machining titanium into complex shapes because of its many advantages and the increasing availability of high-quality forming equipment. During the hot forming process, tools and blanks are heated to between 900°F and 1,600°F in a specialized press to increase the ductility of the material. The introduction of heat temporarily alters the molding characteristics of the material, resulting in near-net-shape parts with uniform wall thicknesses and virtually no springback or cracking.
Because heat acts as a forming agent, the tonnage requirements for hot forming presses are typically much lower than those for cold forming presses. To improve forming efficiency, additional press options such as bed shuttles, thermal gates, data acquisition and active leveling controls can be included in the machine design.
