Description

What is a GR1 titanium plate?

Titanium Gr 1 Sheets & Plates is one of the commonly used among all available titanium alloy and is also called as the titanium alloys workhorse. Ti Gr 1 plate is one of the most comply utilized alloy worldwide wherein the alpha-beta alloy is termed as the titanium industry workhorse alloy. The annealing temperature of the Ti Gr 1 sheet is ranging from 700-785 deg C. Ti Gr 1 plate is having very good tensile attributes at the ambient temp and that is advantageous for creep resistance to 300 deg C.

Gr 1 sheets are also considered as the usually used Ti sheets and it accounts for over half of the titanium sponge used into the wide-reaching where the product confirms by the means of chemical and mechanical property. Ti Gr 1 plate is having very good strength, good corrosion resistance. Also, it is heat treatable and is used to a temperature ranging to 400 deg C.

Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of GR1 titanium plate is tightly controlled to ensure consistent performance. The low oxygen content is the defining characteristic that sets Grade 1 apart from Grade 2 and Grade 3.

Element Composition (Weight %)
Titanium (Ti) Balance (99.5 min)
Oxygen (O) 0.18 max
Iron (Fe) 0.20 max
Carbon (C) 0.08 max
Nitrogen (N) 0.03 max
Hydrogen (H) 0.015 max

The low oxygen content gives Grade 1 its exceptional ductility and formability. For applications requiring higher strength, Grade 2 titanium plate (R50400) or Grade 3 titanium plate (R50550) may be considered, but with a corresponding reduction in formability.

Mechanical Properties

GR1 titanium plate is typically supplied in the annealed condition. The mechanical properties below are standard for plate products.

Property Typical Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength 35 – 45 ksi (240 – 310 MPa)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset) 20 – 30 ksi (138 – 207 MPa)
Elongation 24 – 30%
Modulus of Elasticity 15.2 x 10³ ksi (105 GPa)
Hardness (Rockwell B) 70 – 80
Bend Radius (min) 1.5T – 2.5T (depending on thickness)

These properties represent a balance of strength and ductility. For applications requiring higher strength, cold worked or stress-relieved tempers are available.

Physical Properties

The physical properties of GR1 titanium plate contribute to its unique performance characteristics.

Property Value
Density 0.163 lb/in³ (4.51 g/cm³)
Melting Point 3030°F (1665°C)
Thermal Conductivity 10.8 BTU/ft·hr·°F (15.6 W/m·K)
Electrical Resistivity 55 μΩ·cm
Coefficient of Thermal Expansion 5.0 x 10⁻⁶ /°F (8.8 x 10⁻⁶ /°C) (70–1000°F)
Specific Heat 0.125 BTU/lb·°F (523 J/kg·K)

The thermal conductivity of titanium is lower than that of copper or aluminum, but its corrosion resistance and strength-to-weight ratio often make it the preferred choice for heat exchanger and chemical processing applications.

GR1 vs. GR2 vs. GR3 Titanium Plate: What Is the Difference?

Grade UNS Oxygen (max) Tensile Strength (min) Yield Strength (min) Characteristics
GR1 R50250 0.18% 35 ksi 20 ksi Highest ductility, best formability, maximum corrosion resistance
GR2 R50400 0.25% 50 ksi 40 ksi Moderate strength, good formability, most widely used
GR3 R50550 0.35% 65 ksi 55 ksi Highest strength, reduced formability

For most plate applications, GR1 is chosen when maximum formability and corrosion resistance are required. GR2 is the workhorse grade-stronger than GR1 but still formable. GR3 is used when higher strength is needed and forming requirements are minimal.

Applications for GR1 Titanium Plate

Chemical Processing

In chemical plants, GR1 titanium plate is used for reactor vessels, distillation columns, heat exchanger heads, and storage tanks. It handles aggressive chemicals such as wet chlorine, chlorides, and organic acids that would quickly attack stainless steel or nickel alloys.

Marine and Offshore

Seawater systems-cooling water intake structures, heat exchanger plates, and offshore platform components-are a natural application for GR1 titanium plate. The material resists pitting, crevice corrosion, and erosion corrosion in high-velocity seawater. Desalination plants, shipbuilding, and offshore platforms are common end-use markets.

Aerospace

AMS 4900 and AMS 4901 cover GR1 titanium plate for aerospace components. The material's light weight, corrosion resistance, and reliability make it a standard choice for aircraft skins, structural components, and hydraulic system components.

Medical and Pharmaceutical

The biocompatibility of titanium makes it suitable for pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment and medical devices. GR1 titanium plate is used in sterile processing equipment, surgical instrument components, and implantable device packaging.

Heat Exchangers and Condensers

ASTM B265 grade 1 titanium plate is widely used in plate-and-frame heat exchangers, where thin-gauge plate provides efficient heat transfer with exceptional corrosion resistance. The material's formability allows for precision stamping and forming of heat exchanger plates.

FAQ

What is the difference between GR1 titanium plate and GR2 titanium plate?
GR1 has lower oxygen content, which makes it softer, more ductile, and more formable than GR2. GR2 has higher strength and is more widely used for general applications. GR1 is preferred when maximum formability and corrosion resistance are required.

Is GR1 titanium plate suitable for seawater applications?
Yes. GR1 titanium plate offers exceptional resistance to seawater corrosion, including resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and erosion corrosion. It is widely used in marine and offshore applications.

What is the standard specification for titanium plate?
ASTM B265 grade 1 is the standard specification for titanium sheet, strip, and plate. It covers GR1, GR2, GR3, GR7, GR9, GR11, and GR12 alloys.

Can GR1 titanium plate be welded?
Yes. GR1 titanium plate can be welded using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG), gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG), and plasma arc welding with proper shielding. The weld area must be protected from atmospheric contamination to prevent embrittlement.

What is the maximum operating temperature for GR1 titanium plate?
GR1 titanium is suitable for continuous service up to approximately 600°F (316°C) in oxidizing environments. Above this temperature, oxidation becomes a concern. For higher-temperature applications, specialized titanium alloys may be required.

Does GR1 titanium plate require corrosion protection?
No. GR1 titanium does not require coatings, cathodic protection, or other corrosion protection methods. Its natural oxide layer provides exceptional corrosion resistance in most environments.

What thicknesses are available in GR1 titanium plate?
GR1 titanium plate is available in thicknesses ranging from 0.010 inches (0.25 mm) up to 2 inches (50 mm) or more. Common stock thicknesses include 0.032", 0.040", 0.063", 0.090", 0.125", 0.250", 0.500", and 1.000". Customized GR1 titanium plate sizes can be ordered from manufacturers.

Packaging

We cap and protect every GR1 titanium plate with interleaving paper or plastic film between sheets to prevent surface scratching during handling and transit. Plates are grouped by size, thickness, and heat number, with edge protectors and steel banding to secure the bundle. Each bundle is placed on a steel-framed pallet or in a wooden crate, depending on the order size and destination. For export shipments, crates are built to ISPM 15 standards with fumigated wood and reinforced corners. We include a packing list inside each crate and a weatherproof copy attached to the outside. No loose plates, no unprotected edges-just secure packaging that arrives ready for your fabrication floor.
