Grade 5 titanium wire is a common high-strength, lightweight alloy used in a variety of applications. Like most titanium alloys, Grade 5 titanium electrodes have excellent corrosion resistance in most natural and many industrial process environments. Grade 5 titanium wire is alloyed with aluminum, manganese, iron, molybdenum, and other metals to increase strength, withstand high temperatures, and reduce the weight of the resultant alloy. Grade 5 titanium coiled wire is commonly used in pressure vessels; rocket starter chassis; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and critical forgings that require a high strength-to-weight ratio. Grade 5 titanium wire is an aerospace alloy with ultimate tensile strengths of 120,000 psi and higher, and accounts for 50 percent of the world's total titanium usage. The high cost of Grade 5 titanium limits its use in military applications, aircraft, spacecraft, medical devices, highly stressed components such as connecting rods in expensive sports cars, and some advanced sports equipment and consumer electronics.
