Zirconium is a hard, lustrous, silver-colored metal extracted from ores (oxides or zirconia, ZrSiO4) by conversion to tetrahalides and then reduction with magnesium. Due to the formation of a stable oxide film, the metal is extremely resistant to corrosion and is unaffected by acids (except HF) and bases.

Zirconium is a chemical element with the symbol Zr and atomic number 40.It is a lustrous, grayish-white, strong transition metal similar to titanium. Zirconium has never been discovered as a natural metal, but is mainly obtained from the mineral zircon. Zirconium is used as an alloying agent due to its high corrosion resistance.

Zirconium is a lustrous, off-white, soft, ductile and malleable metal that is solid at room temperature but becomes hard and brittle at higher purities. Powdered zirconium is highly flammable, but solid zirconium does not ignite easily. Zirconium is highly resistant to corrosion by alkalis, acids, brines and other media. However, it will dissolve in hydrochloric and sulfuric acids, especially when fluorine is present. Zinc-containing alloys become magnetic below 35 K. Zirconium has a melting point of 1855.
Zirconium has a melting point of 1855°C and a boiling point of 4409°C. It is also a very strong corrosion resistant alloy. Zirconium has a Pauling electronegativity of 1.33. It has the fourth lowest electronegativity of the d-region elements, after yttrium, lutetium, and hafnium.
