ASTM B338 / ASME SB338 Grade 5 / UNS R56400 Titanium Alloy Seamless Tubes
Sep 09, 2025 ASTM-B338-Titanium.pdf
Products Description
Material Characteristics
Chemical Composition
Gr5 titanium alloy is primarily composed of titanium (Ti), with approximately 6% aluminum (Al) and 4% vanadium (V), and the remainder being titanium. Aluminum enhances the alloy's strength and heat resistance, while vanadium improves ductility and toughness. Impurity elements such as iron (Fe), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H) are strictly controlled to ensure material purity and performance.
Physical Properties
Density: Approximately 4.43 g/cm³, slightly lower than pure titanium (4.51 g/cm³), offering significant lightweight advantages.
Melting point: Approximately 1668°C (3034°F), suitable for high-temperature environments.
Magnetic properties: Completely non-magnetic, avoiding magnetic interference issues, making it highly valued in aerospace and medical device fields.
Mechanical Properties
Strength: Yield strength can exceed 880 MPa, tensile strength can exceed 960 MPa, far surpassing ordinary steel.
Ductility: Elongation is approximately 8%–10%, and reduction of area can exceed 20%.
Low-temperature toughness: Maintains good toughness in cryogenic environments (e.g., liquid helium temperatures), suitable for cryogenic engineering.
Fatigue performance: Exhibits excellent fatigue resistance under high-frequency alternating loads, with fatigue resistance several times that of ordinary steel.
Creep resistance: Demonstrates outstanding creep resistance in working environments below 500°C, enabling long-term endurance under high-stress conditions.
Chemical Properties
Corrosion resistance: Benefiting from a dense oxide film formed on its surface, it provides strong protection in atmospheric, seawater, and acid-base media. It exhibits good corrosion resistance to most acids, alkalis, and salt solutions, particularly excelling in chloride solutions (e.g., seawater). It is resistant to stress corrosion cracking, especially in chloride environments, making it widely used in marine engineering.

Application Fields
Aerospace Industry
Gr5 titanium alloy is an ideal material for manufacturing key components such as aircraft engines, aircraft skins, and flight control systems. Due to its lightweight, high strength, and strong corrosion resistance, it enhances aircraft performance and longevity. For example, in fighter jet manufacturing, to meet structural strength requirements during high-speed flight while minimizing overall weight for improved fuel efficiency and maneuverability, Gr5 titanium alloy is the preferred choice. Certain critical components of rocket engines also rely on Gr5 titanium alloy, as it maintains good mechanical properties at high temperatures, withstands immense pressure without deformation, and ensures reliable operation of rocket engines.
Medical Field
Gr5 titanium alloy exhibits excellent biocompatibility and is widely used in medical instruments, bone repair devices, artificial joints, and more. The internal human environment is complex, requiring implants not only to have sufficient strength to support body weight and movement but also to avoid triggering immune responses. Gr5 titanium alloy adapts well to human tissues, reducing the risk of rejection and providing patients with better treatment outcomes and quality of life. Dental implants are another important application of Gr5 titanium alloy, as they can withstand various complex forces in the oral environment (e.g., chewing), remain securely fixed in the jawbone, and maintain long-term stability, offering reliable solutions for tooth loss restoration.
Sports Equipment Field
Gr5 titanium alloy is used in high-end sports equipment such as bicycle frames, golf clubs, and tennis rackets. Its lightweight and high strength ensure sufficient durability while reducing overall weight, thereby improving speed and controllability and extending the equipment's service life.
Automotive Industry
Gr5 titanium alloy can be used in automotive braking systems, exhaust pipes, seats, and frames to reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency. Although its initial cost is high, its long-term benefits include reduced fatigue-related maintenance costs and significant economic advantages.
Marine Engineering and Chemical Industry
Gr5 titanium alloy is used in seawater desalination equipment, offshore platforms, and corrosion-resistant pipelines, valves, and storage tanks. It resists seawater corrosion and erosion from various chemicals (e.g., sulfuric acid and alkaline solutions), ensuring reliable operation in harsh environments.
Other Fields
Gr5 titanium alloy is also used in oil and gas pipelines, submarine cable protective sleeves, nuclear waste storage tanks, and other special applications. Its excellent performance and stability make it a common material in future high-pressure valves, equipment, and chemical processing industries.
