What Are the Main Aluminum Alloy Refining Technologies?

Aluminum alloy refining primarily involves removing gases and non-metallic inclusions from the molten alloy. The main gas in aluminum alloys is hydrogen (accounting for over 85%), and the primary inclusions are aluminum oxide. Since the saturated solubility of hydrogen in liquid and solid aluminum alloys differs by nearly 20 times, hydrogen is highly likely to precipitate during the solidification of aluminum alloys, causing pinholes in the castings.

Inclusions and gases interact with each other. In industrial pure aluminum, pores appear when the hydrogen content exceeds 0.1 mL per 100 g of molten aluminum alloy, whereas in high-purity aluminum, pores only appear when the hydrogen content reaches 0.4 mL per 100 g of molten aluminum alloy. This indicates that degassing must be accompanied by slag removal, and slag removal is the foundation of degassing.

Commonly used refining agents for aluminum alloys are hexachloroethane or chloride salts. These refining agents are highly effective in degassing and slag removal but are environmentally unfriendly and are gradually being replaced by non-toxic refining agents.

Researchers domestically and internationally have developed two effective refining methods: the Rotating Impeller Degasser (RID) method and the Flux Injection (FI) method. The Rotating Impeller Degasser (RID) method involves injecting inert gas into the molten alloy and using a rotating impeller to break large bubbles into small bubbles with a diameter of about 0.5 mm. These small bubbles are evenly distributed in the molten alloy and rise slowly, improving degassing efficiency.

The Flux Injection (FI) method involves uniformly injecting powdered flux into the molten alloy using inert gas as a carrier. This increases the contact area between the flux and the molten alloy, enhancing slag removal. Simultaneously, the flux alters the properties of the interface between the bubbles and the molten alloy, improving the hydrogen removal efficiency of the inert gas.

Currently, a more effective refining method combines the two approaches mentioned above, known as the Rotating Purge method. This method involves injecting powdered flux into the molten alloy based on the principles of the Rotating Impeller Degasser method.
