Processing Characteristics Of Titanium
Jan 12, 2024
At present, nearly 30 types of titanium alloys are produced in the world. The most widely used titanium alloys are Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn. The industrial method of producing titanium metal is the Raoul method and the product is titanium sponge. The traditional process for manufacturing titanium is to make ingots of titanium sponge, which are then processed into titanium. Accordingly, the main steps in the process of titanium materials from mining to manufacturing are:
Titanium Ore -> Mining -> Beer Beneficiation -> Terra Concentrate -> Enrichment -> Titanium Enriched Material -> Chlorination -> Crude TiCl4 -> Refining -> Pure TiCl4 -> Magnesium Reduction -> Titanium Sponge -> Casting -> Ingots -> Processing -> Titanium or Titanium Parts. If rutile is mined through the above steps, enrichment is not required and crude TiCl4 can be obtained by direct chlorination. in addition, the casting operation is supposed to be a metallurgical process, but is sometimes categorized as a process.
The above processes refer to plastic processing and casting. Plastic processing methods include forging, extrusion, rolling, and stretching. Titanium ingots can be processed into various sizes of cakes, rings, plates (titanium sheets), tubes, rods, profiles and other products, or casting methods can be used to make various shapes of parts.

Titanium and titanium alloy plastic deformation processing has a greater resistance; room temperature plasticity is poor, yield limit and strength limit ratio is high, rebound, notch-sensitive, easy to deform with the mold bonding, easy to inhale harmful gases when heated, etc., plastics processing is more difficult than steel, copper.
Therefore, the processing of titanium and titanium alloys must take into account these characteristics.
Titanium using plastic processing, added clay size is not restricted, can be mass produced. However, the yield is low, and a large number of waste edges are generated during processing.
For the above disadvantages of titanium plastic processing, titanium powder metallurgy process has been developed in recent years. Titanium powder metallurgy process is the same as ordinary powder metallurgy, only sintering must be carried out under vacuum. It is suitable for the production of large quantities, small size parts, especially suitable for the production of complex parts. The method requires almost no further processing and has a high yield. It can make full use of titanium scrap as raw material and can reduce production costs, but cannot produce large titanium parts. Titanium Powder Metallurgy Process: Titanium Powder (or Titanium Alloy Powder) -> Sieving -> Mixing -> Pressing and Molding -> Sintering -> Auxiliary Processing -> Titanium Products.
