Tantalum Metal
Tantalum is chemically very much like niobium, since the two have similar electronic configurations and, due to lanthanide contraction, the radius of the tantalum ion is almost the same as that of niobium. Tantalum is usually in the +5 oxidation state in its compounds; lower oxidation states have been prepared, notably +2 to +4. Tantalum compounds are relatively unimportant commercially, although the carbide TaC is used in carbide tools for machining hard metals. Almost all naturally occurring tantalum is a stable isotope of tantalum-181. however, a small fraction, 0.012%, tantalum-180, has the unusual properties found in the excited state. The excited state half-life of tantalum-180 exceeds 1.2 x 10 15 years; the half-life of the ground state (the lowest energy state) is only 8.154 hours.
Description
Tantalum is a chemical element with the symbol Ta and atomic number 73.Tantalum was formerly known as tantalum, named after the Greek mythological character Tantalus. Tantalum is a very hard, ductile, lustrous blue-gray transition metal that is highly resistant to corrosion. It is a refractory metal and is widely used as a component of strong alloys with high melting points. It belongs to group 5 elements along with vanadium and niobium, and always occurs in geological resources together with niobium, which is chemically similar, and is found mainly in minerals such as tantalite, columbite and coltan.
Products Description
Tantalum's chemical inertness and extremely high melting point make it an important material for laboratory and industrial equipment such as reaction vessels and vacuum furnaces. It is also used in tantalum capacitors for electronic devices such as computers. Tantalum is recognized as a key technology element by the European Commission.
