ASTM F136 Titanium medical wire forms higher hardness stabilized carbides with carbon. The growth of the carbide layer between titanium and carbon is determined by the rate of diffusion of titanium through the carbide layer.

This specification covers the chemical, mechanical, and metallurgical requirements for the forged annealed titanium-6 aluminum-4 vanadium ELI (ultra-low gap atom) alloy (R56401) for the manufacture of surgical implants. Products are categorized as: strip, sheet, plate, bar, forged bar, and wire. Thermal analysis shall conform to the specified chemical composition requirements. Product analysis tolerances do not extend the specified thermal analysis requirements, but cover inter-laboratory differences in chemical content measurements. Tensile and bending tests shall be performed to meet the specified requirements.
