What Are the Methods for Deoxidizing and Pickling Titanium Alloy?

Most titanium alloys require surface treatment during and after heat treatment to remove oxide scales and various contaminants from the metal surface, reduce the activity of the exposed metal surface, and prepare for the application of protective layers and various functional coatings. Surface treatment is also necessary before and during the coating process. The purpose of such coatings is to improve the properties of the metal surface, such as preventing corrosion, oxidation, and wear.

The pickling conditions for titanium and its alloys depend on the type (characteristics) of the oxide layer and the existing reaction layer. The type of these layers is influenced by high-temperature heating processes and temperature increases during processing (e.g., forging, casting, welding, etc.).

At lower processing temperatures or high-temperature heating conditions below approximately 600°C, only thin oxide layers are formed. Under high-temperature conditions, an oxygen-rich diffusion zone forms near the oxide layer, which must also be removed through pickling. Various methods can be used to remove oxide scales: mechanical methods for thick oxide layers and hard surface layers, descaling in molten salt baths, and pickling in acid solutions.

In many cases, a combination of methods can be employed. For example, mechanical descaling followed by pickling, or salt bath treatment followed by pickling. For oxide layers and diffusion layers formed at higher temperatures, special methods are required. However, oxide layers formed under high-temperature heating conditions up to 600°C can mostly be dissolved through conventional pickling.
