Niobium has a low neutron capture cross-section, good thermal conductivity and high strength, making it an ideal material for use in atomic energy reactors.

Niobium is used in three applications in atomic energy reactors.

(1) jacket material for nuclear fuel; (2) alloying element for nuclear fuel; and (3) structural material for heat exchangers in nuclear reactors.
