6AL-4V Eli is an alloyed titanium alloy. Its strength is enhanced by the addition of approximately 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. 6AL-4V Eli (Extra-Low Interstitial Titanium Alloy) is purer than 6AL-4V Grade 5 due to its lower content of iron and the interstitial elements carbon and oxygen. 6AL-4V Eli is typically supplied in the annealed condition, but can also be beta-annealed. Grade 23 6AL-4V Eli offers high strength and toughness, as well as good corrosion resistance. It is widely used in aerospace applications where high fracture toughness and fatigue strength are required. As a biocompatible titanium alloy, it is also known for its applications in the medical and dental industries.
Machinability
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has developed a rating system for the machinability of various materials. The machinability rating for steel B1112 (160 Brinell hardness) is arbitrarily set at 100%. Using this as a guideline, steels rated below 100% are more difficult to machine, while steels rated above 100% are easier to machine. Titanium alloy 6AL-4V Eli has a rating of 22% of B1112 steel. Slow cutting speeds, high feed rates, sharp tools, and ample cutting fluid are recommended.
